Michael Ferrari,Marvin B. Sussman: Childhood Disability and Family Systems

Childhood Disability and Family Systems

Description

First published in 1987, this book focuses on childhood disability within the family. It examines the very nature of disability itself, as well as many of the fundamental elements of families. The book was written at a time when the meaning level of disability and its effect on family and society were rapidly changing and people with disabilities were starting to benefit from opportunities to compensate for whatever disabilities they may have had. Modern technology and an affluent society afforded advantages to support many of its disabled members. Contributors examine the contemporary context of disability, the cost of disability to families, ethical, philosophical and social issues underlying the treatment and rehabilitation of children with severe disabilities, and the role of professionals, amongst other topics. This book will be of interest to those involved in teaching, research and direct care with families who have children with disabilities. Although written in the late 80s, the work discusses subjects that are still vital today.

For the first time, four German WWII pilots share their side of the story.Few perspectives epitomize the sheer drama and sacrifice of combat more perfectly than those of the fighter pilots of World War II. As romanticized as any soldier in history, the WWII fighter pilot was viewed as larger than life: a dashing soul waging war amongst the clouds. In the sixty-five-plus years since the Allied victory, stories of these pilots heroics have never been in short supply. But what about their adversaries the highly skilled German aviators who pushed the Allies to the very brink of defeat?Of all of the Luftwaffe s fighter aces, the stories of Walter Krupinski, Adolf Galland, Eduard Neumann, and Wolfgang Falck Childhood Disability and Family Systems ebook pdf shine particularly bright. In "The German Aces Speak," for the first time in any book, these four prominent and influential Luftwaffe fighter pilots reminisce candidly about their service in World War II. Personally interviewed by author and military historian Colin Heaton, they bring the past to life as they tell their stories about the war, their battles, their lives, and, perhaps most importantly, how they felt about serving under the Nazi leadership of Hermann Goring and Adolf Hitler. From thrilling air battles to conflicts on the ground with their own commanders, the aces memories disclose a side of World War II that has gone largely unseen by the American public: the experience of the German pilot."

Lauren Sandler: One and Only: The Freedom of Having an Only Child, and the Joy of Being One

One and Only: The Freedom of Having an Only Child, and the Joy of Being One

Description

A funny, tough-minded case for being and having an only child, debunking the myths about only children and taking glory in the pleasures of singletons: "A swift and absorbing read...may change your mind and the national conversation" (Psychology Today). Journalist Lauren Sandler is an only child and the mother of one. After investigating what only children are really like and whether stopping at one child is an answer to reconciling motherhood and modernity, she learned a lot about herself--and a lot about our culture's assumptions. In this heartfelt work, Sandler legitimizes a discussion about the larger societal costs of having more than one, which Jessica Grose in her review in The New Republic calls, "the vital part of the conversation that's not being discussed in the chatter" surrounding parenting. Between the recession, the stresses of modern life, and the ecological dangers ahead, there are increasing pressures on parents to think seriously about singletons. Sandler considers the unique ways that singletons thrive, and why so many of their families are happier. One and Only examines these ideas, including what the rise of the single-child family means for our economies, our environment, and our freedom, leaving the reader "informed and sympathetic," writes Nora Krug in the Washington Post. Through this journey, "Sandler delves deeply, thoughtfully, and often humorously into history, culture, politics, religion, race, economics, and of course, scientific research" writes Lori Gottlieb, The New York Times Book Review. "I couldn't put it down," says Randi Hutter Epstein in the Huffington Post. Sandler "isn't proselytizing, she's just stating it like it is. Seductively honest." At the end, Sandler has quite possibly cracked the code of happiness, demonstrating that having just one may be the way to resolve our countless struggles with adulthood in the modern age.

In this volume, Osho gives an overview of the Eastern science behind the energy centers in the human body that are sometimes known as chakras. It is a science that underlies traditional Chinese medicine, Indian Ayurveda, and the practice of kundalini yoga, among other disciplines that recognize the deep connection between mind and body. Osho also shows how these same principles apply to human psychological growth and maturation and the evolution of consciousness. The One and Only: The Freedom of Having an Only Child, and the Joy of Being One download book ideas upon which public education was founded in the last half of the nineteenth century were wrong. And despite their continued dominance in educational thinking for a century and a half, these ideas are no more right today. So argues one of the most original and highly regarded educational theorists of our time in "Getting It Wrong from the Beginning." Kieran Egan explains how we have come to take mistaken concepts about education for granted and why this dooms our attempts at educational reform.

Patricia Scanlan: A Time for Friends

A Time for Friends

Description

When are the boundaries of friendship pushed too far, and when is it time to stop flying over oceans for someone who wouldn't jump over a puddle for you? There comes a time when Hilary Hammond has to make that call. Hilary and Colette O'Mahony have been friends since childhood, but when irrepressible Jonathan Harpur breezes into Hilary's life and goes into business with her, Colette is not best pleased. After their first encounter Colette thinks he's a 'pushy upstart' while he thinks she's 'a snobby little diva'. And so the battle lines are drawn and Hilary is bang in the middle. But as the years roll by and each of them is faced with difficult times and tough decisions, one thing is clear...to have a friend you must be a friend. And that's when Hilary discovers that sometimes your best friend can be your greatest enemy...

Not since Strunk and White's ELEMENTS OF STYLE has a book compressed so many insights into so few pages. With his trademark simplicity and wit, Marty Neumeier has written and illustrated a concise guide that can be read quickly over a lunch break or savored slowly over a lifetime. Part 1, "How can I innovate?" offers insightful guidance such as "Feel before you think," "See what's not there," and "Ask a bigger question." Rule #1 gives the paradoxical advice: "Break the rules." Part 2, "How should I work?" offers down-to-earth tips on craft: "Use a linear process for static elements," and "Express related elements in a similar manner." The reader is also reminded: "Don't be boring!" In Part 3, "How can I learn?" contains practical advice including "Do your own projects," "Invest in your originality," and "Develop an authentic style." Finally, Part 4, "How can I matter?" deals with the deeper questions of a career in creativity, such as "Overcommit to a mission," "Build support A Time for Friends ebook pdf methodically," and "Become who you are." THE 46 RULES OF GENIUS is a reassuring lighthouse against the swirling tides of innovation. Geniuses from every discipline will want to keep it in sight.

John Fardell: Manfred the Baddie

Manfred the Baddie

Description

Kidnapping inventors, stealing from art museums, conducting acts of piracy on the high seas. Will Manfred ever learn his lesson? He is even nasty to his own henchmen! John Fardell's inventive story and richly detailed artwork combine to make an exciting, hilarious book that children will want to read time and time again.

Intended for ages 8-14, this fascinating new book describes how Japan grew from rule by local chieftains to an emperor-led nation with many noble families competing for prominence. Beautiful spreads and full-colour photographs unveil Japan's rich history and the people who struggled to make it their own. Topics include: wet rice cultivation; trade with other cultures, their influence, and isolation in the 17th century; from early pit dwellings to the development of castle towns; nature worship, the rise of Shinto, and Buddhism and Confucianism; life as a samurai warrior; sword making and pottery; and herbal medicine. 'No Logo' was a book that defined a generation when it was first published in 1999. For it's 10th anniversay Naomi Klein has updated this iconic book. By the time you're twenty-one, you'll have seen or heard a million advertisements. But you won't be happier for it. This is a book about that much-maligned, much-misunderstood generation coming up behind the slackers, who are being intelligent and active about the world in which they find themselves. It is a world in which all that is 'alternative' is sold, where any innovation or subversion is immediately adopted by un-radical, faceless corporations. But, Manfred the Baddie download book gradually, tentatively, a new generation is beginning to fight consumerism with its own best weapons; and it is the first skirmishes in this war that this abrasively intelligent book documents brilliantly.

The Sublime Object of Ideology

Description

Slavoj i[ek, the maverick philosopher, author of over 30 books, acclaimed as the Elvis of cultural theory, and today s most controversial public intellectual. His work traverses the fields of philosophy, psychoanalysis, theology, history and political theory, taking in film, popular culture, literature and jokes all to provide acute analyses of the complexities of contemporary ideology as well as a serious and sophisticated philosophy. His recent films "The Pervert s Guide to the Cinema" and "i[ek!" reveal a theorist at the peak of his powers and a skilled communicator. Now Verso is making his classic titles, each of which stand as a core of his ever-expanding life s work, available as new editions. Each is beautifully re-packaged, including new introductions from i[ek himself. Simply put, they are the essential texts for understanding i[ek s thought and thus cornerstones of contemporary philosophy. "The Sublime Object of Ideology" Slavoj i[ek s first book is a provocative and original work looking at the question of human agency in a postmodern world. In a thrilling tour de force that made his name, he explores the ideological fantasies of wholeness and exclusion which make up human society."

Consider Facebook-it's human contact, only easier to engage with and easier to avoid. Developing technology promises closeness. Sometimes it delivers, but much of our modern life leaves us less connected with people and more connected to simulations of them. In Alone Together, MIT technology and society professor Sherry Turkle explores the power of our new tools and toys to dramatically alter our social lives. It's a nuanced exploration of what we are looking for-and sacrificing-in a world of electronic companions and social networking tools, and an argument that, despite the hand-waving of today's self-described prophets of the future, it will be the next generation who will chart the path between isolation and connectivity.

The new edition of 50 Literacy Strategies: Step by Step by Gail E. Tompkins is a conveniently organized resource for Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other download PDF all elementary and middle school teachers, providing research-based and classroom-tested strategies to develop literacy skills. Everything you need to know to implement, adapt, and enrich each strategy is included in a consistent, easy-to-understand format. 'In the months that followed I watched His Holiness working on a new book...I began to think that perhaps the time had come for me to turn my paws to a book of my own ...one that tells my own tale ...How I was rescued from a fate too grisly to contemplate, to become constant companion to a man who is not only one of the world's greatest spiritual leaders and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, but who is also a dab hand with the can opener.' Not so much fly-on-the-wall as cat-on-the-sill, this is the warm-hearted tale of a small kitten rescued from the slums of New Delhi who finds herself in a beautiful sanctuary with sweeping views of the snow-capped Himalayas. In her exotic new home, the Dalai Lama's cat encounters Hollywood stars, Buddhist masters, Ivy-league professors, famous philanthropists, and a host of other people who come visiting His Holiness. Each encounter offers a fresh insight into finding happiness and meaning in the midst of a life of busy-ness and challenge.

English for the Natives: Discover the Grammar You Don't Know You Know

Description

Discover the grammar you already know. 'My first English lesson was grammar with the terrifying Mrs Petrie. She spent the entire time marching up and down the classroom, thwacking various items of school furniture with a ruler while she banged on about the ING part of the verb. I sat there, vibrating with fear, desperately trying to figure out what on earth she could mean. Irregular Negative Gerund? Intransitive Nominative Genitive? It was only years later, when I was teaching English to foreign students, that I realised that English grammar wasn't obscure and wilfully difficult but a fascinating subject which I was already brilliant at - and this book will prove that you are too.' Forget the little you think you know about English grammar and start afresh with this highly entertaining and accessible guide. English for the Natives outlines the rules and structures of our language as they are taught to foreign students - and have never before been explained to us. Harry Ritchie also examines the grammar of dialects as well as standard English and shows how non-standard forms are just as valid. With examples from a wide variety of sources, from Ali G to John Betjeman, Margaret Thatcher to Match of the Day, this essential book reveals some surprising truths about our language and teaches you all the things you didn't know you knew about grammar.

Fourth grade was supposed to be a fresh start for Mike, but he just can't sit still. His parents won't even let him play soccer anymore. It's owner, Mr. Zerlin, is a magician, and, amazingly, he seems to think that Mike could be a magician, too! Based on the extraordinary magic of Mike Lane, with actual (very cool) magic tricks included, this series is sure to appeal to anyone looking for new and "magic" ways to fit in. She demonstrates how to achieve a flawless complexion and bring out the best in every face shape, and how to make up eyes and lips depending on your face and eye shape, age, coloring, and overall style. In Part 2: The Problem Solver, Jemma addresses all the main beauty concerns of every woman how to take care of your skin, how to look younger, how to keep your makeup up-to-date, and how to cope with environmental onslaughts like the damaging effects of the sun and cold weather. Also included are ten great eye and lip combinations, a tutorial on how to achieve iconic looks from Kate Moss to Audrey Hepburn, plus a fail-safe, five-minute makeup regime for whenever you're pressed for time and much more. Claire North: The Sudden Appearance of Hope

The Sudden Appearance of Hope

Description

My name is Hope Arden. I am the girl the world forgets. It started when I was sixteen years old. A father forgetting to drive me to school. A mother setting the table for three, not four. A friend who looks at me and sees a stranger. No matter what I do, the words I say, the crimes I commit - you will never remember who I am. That makes my life tricky. It also makes me dangerous ...The Sudden Appearance of Hope is the tale of a girl no one remembers, yet her story will stay with you for ever. Praise for Claire North: 'Just extraordinary' Claire Mackintosh, author of I Let You Go 'Beautiful and gripping' Guardian 'Little short of a masterpiece' Independent 'North's talent shines out' Sunday Times 'One of the fiction highlights of the decade' Judy Finnigan, Richard and Judy Book Club

Now why in a whirl would someone leave beyond a buddy? Just what be that turtle lad searchings for? I said you best read the book to find out. Merle said, Doot doot. " It was 1969, and temperatures were rising across the factories of the north as workers demanded better pay and conditions. Soon, discontent would erupt in what became known as Italy's "Hot Autumn." A young worker from the impoverished south arrives at Fiat's Mirafiori factory in Turin, where his darker complexion begins to fade from the fourteen-hour workdays in sweltering industrial heat. He is frequently late for work, and sells his blood when money runs low. He fakes a crushed finger to win sick leave. His bosses try to withhold his wages. Our cynical, dry-witted narrator will not bend to their will. "I want everything, everything that's owed to me," he tells them. "Nothing more and nothing less, because you don't mess with me." Around him, students are holding secret meetings and union workers begin halting work on the assembly lines, crippling the Mirafiori factory with months of continuous The Sudden Appearance of Hope ebook pdf strikes. Before long, barricades line the roads, tear gas wafts into private homes, and the slogan "We Want Everything" is ringing through the streets. Wrought in spare and measured prose, Balestrini's novel depicts an explosive uprising.Introduced by Rachel Kushner, the author of the best-selling The Flamethrowers, We Want Everything is the incendiary fictional account of events that led to a decade of revolt.

Founded in 1902 Norwich City may lack the glamour of some of the big London clubs, but the Canaries have an incredibly loyal following. They joined the new Third Division in 1920 and in 1935 moved to their current home, Carrow Road. It wasn't until the 1971-72 season that promotion to the First Division was achieved, quickly followed by two losing Wembley appearances in League Cup Finals against Spurs and Aston Villa. In 1985 they finally won the trophy, beating Sunderland 1-0. Both clubs were relegated at the end of the season. Norwich bounced back immediately and went on to achieve their highest placings in their league history. Weber's Burgers, Sausages & More: Over 160 Barbecue Favourites free pdf This book celebrates the history of an iconic club - a club that even their opponents have a sneaking respect for - unless they come from Ipswich. When Football Was Football - Norwich City explores the club's colourful history and tells the story of some of their legendary stars and managers.

French Literature: A Very Short Introduction

Description

The heritage of literature in the French language is rich, varied, and extensive in time and space; appealing both to its immediate public, readers of French, and also to a global audience reached through translations and film adaptations. The first great works of this repertory were written in the twelfth century in northern France, and now, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, include authors writing in many parts of the world, ranging from the Caribbean to Western Africa. French Literature: A Very Short Introduction introduces this lively literary world by focusing on texts - epics, novels, plays, poems, and screenplays - that concern protagonists whose adventures and conflicts reveal shifts in literary and social practices. From the hero of the medieval Song of Roland to the Caribbean heroines of I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem or the European expatriate in Japan in Fear and Trembling, these problematic protagonists allow us to understand what interests writers and readers across the wide world of French. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

The bible of cesarean prevention. Wall Street Journal A landmark event, which will change the course of obstetric care by giving parents the informtion they need to make the decisions that are best for their own families. Comprehensive, highly readable, sensitive ...should be read by everyone who cares about someone. Marian Tompson Director, Alternative Birth Crisis Coalition American Academy of Medicine Required reading for all childbirth Mark for Everyone free download pdf professionals and prospective parents. Journal of Gynecological Nursing Introduction by Ronald F. Thiemann Foreword by Elaine Pagels By a founder of the Centering Prayer movement Originally a Wit Lecture by one of today's key spiritual writers, this is a reflection on contemplative prayer, the search for happiness, and our need to explore the inner world. The search for God, Keating says, is also the search for ourselves, but our self-consciousness gets in the way. He takes the unique angle of the contemplative journey as "divine therapy" for the illness of the human condition, a method for opening up to our own wounded unconscious. As we move into a global culture, he says, this process of letting go of attachments and of self-centeredness is more important than ever. A work of beauty and clarity, The Human Condition - - draws from a wide range of classic and modern spiritual sources, as well as from solid common sense - explains how God is the only true security and how divine love is the full affirmation of who we are - shows how even a life of action needs contemplation and the practice of the presence of God
